Hospital collaboration

A guide belongs where the families are.

A website helps, but a printed guide sitting in an ICU waiting area reaches a family at the exact moment they need it. That is why In Their Corner now works in official collaboration with Mount Sinai South Nassau, with more hospitals to come.

Official collaboration

Mount Sinai South Nassau

In Their Corner was written for the kind of intensive care unit where my family spent weeks, and it is now developed in official collaboration with Mount Sinai South Nassau on Long Island. This is the unit the guide was always meant for, and it is the unit shaping it.

As part of that collaboration, the full guide has been read and reviewed by more than ten ICU nurses at the hospital, along with the head of the intensive care unit. That review is the whole point: every page a family picks up carries the judgment of the people who work in these rooms every shift.

Why this hospital

The unit the guide was written for.

Mount Sinai South Nassau is a 455 bed teaching hospital, the Long Island flagship of the Mount Sinai Health System, with Magnet recognized nursing, the highest national honor for nursing care. It is minutes from where this project began.

We designed the printed trifold for this collaboration from the start. The cover reserves a dedicated space for the hospital's logo, so the guide families pick up carries the name of the unit caring for their person.

What the review covered

Every section of the guide went in front of the ICU nursing team: the monitor explanations, the care team roles, the advocacy questions, and the sibling and self care pages. Where the unit's day to day practice differed from a draft, the unit's version won. Their word is final.

What adoption means

What we ask of a partner hospital, and what we give

Nurses review it

ICU nursing staff read the full guide and correct anything that does not match how the unit actually works. At Mount Sinai South Nassau, more than ten ICU nurses and the head of the unit have already done exactly that. Their word is final.

The unit stocks it

Printed guides live in the waiting area and at the front desk, free for any family to take. We keep them stocked. The hospital's logo goes on the cover.

We track what works

We count how many guides get taken and gather feedback from families and staff, so the hospital can see the guide is helping and we can keep making it better.

Beyond one hospital

Where we want to expand

Every ICU has a waiting room, and every waiting room has a family that does not know what the machines mean. Here is the order we are working in.

Step one, underway

One unit, done right

Official collaboration with Mount Sinai South Nassau, with the nurse review complete. Next: stocked guides in the waiting area and real feedback from families.

Step two

More Long Island hospitals

Take what we learn from the first unit and bring the guide to more ICUs across Long Island.

Step three

More languages

Families do not all speak English, and a guide you cannot read is no guide at all. Translated versions are on our list, starting with Spanish.

Step four

Anywhere a family needs it

The website already reaches anyone with a phone. The long-term goal is a printed guide in any unit that wants one, anywhere.
